Active Travel

At Southfield Primary, we are committed to promoting safe, healthy and sustainable travel for all members of our school community. Walking, cycling, scooting and using public transport helps our pupils stay active, supports their wellbeing, and reduces congestion around the school.

We are proud participants in the Modeshift STARS programme, which recognises schools that actively encourage sustainable travel. Through this programme, we continually develop initiatives that make it easier and safer for children and families to choose active travel.

Our Initiatives

We offer a wide range of opportunities for pupils to travel actively:

  • Walk Once a Week, where pupils are encouraged to walk regularly and celebrate their achievements.
  • Cycling and scooter training, including Learn to Ride sessions, Bikeability, Dr Bike maintenance workshops, and scooter skills for younger children.
  • Park and Stride schemes and safe walking routes to reduce congestion at the school gate.
  • Curriculum-linked learning, teaching pupils about road safety, local geography, environmental awareness, and map skills.

Our Impact

These programmes have already made a positive difference. More pupils are walking, cycling, and scooting to school. Road safety awareness has improved, and children are becoming more confident and independent in their travel.

Supporting Families

We provide information, maps, and guidance for families to encourage safe travel. Updates on routes, events, and training are shared regularly through our website, newsletters, and social media.

Looking Forward

This is just the start. We are committed to expanding our initiatives and working with pupils, parents, and the local community to continue building a safer, greener, and more active school environment.

Southfield is working with Doncaster Council and Modeshift STARS to encourage pupils and families to travel to and from school in active and sustainable ways. Walking, wheeling, cycling, and using mobility aids are all great options that help promote healthier lifestyles, reduce traffic, and improve air quality around the school. For families who need to use public transport, Doncaster offers a range of services to support school journeys. You can plan your journey and find ticket information on the Travel South Yorkshire website. Local bus services 381 and 382 serve the Armthorpe area and connect to Doncaster town centre. You can view the full timetable and route map by following this link:

Travel Passes for Primary School Children

Children under the age of 11 in South Yorkshire do not need a travel pass to benefit from concessionary fares on public transport. For older children, Zoom Zero Travel Pass - Zoom Zero Travel Passes allow children who are entitled to them, to have free transport via public transport to and from school
